Mantra & Kirtan: The Yoga of Sound with Ethan Starkey
Friday, August 21
6:30-8:30pm • Brookline
Discover the transformative practices of mantra and kirtan—ancient traditions that use sound as a path to meditation, presence, and inner stillness.
In the yogic tradition, sound is understood as the first expression of creation, symbolized by the sacred syllable Om. Through the repetition of mantra, practitioners have long cultivated steadiness of mind, clarity, and contemplation.
This workshop begins with an introduction to the philosophy and practice of mantra, exploring how sound can become a powerful support for meditation and focused awareness. From there, we'll move into kirtan—the joyful practice of call-and-response chanting accompanied by music, inviting both individual reflection and shared community.
Whether you're new to mantra or have an established chanting practice, all are welcome.
"mananāt trāyate iti mantraḥ" — "That which liberates the mind through contemplation is called mantra."
No need for a yoga mat, but wear comfortable clothes you can sit in.
Sliding Scale Donations: $10-$100 (all donations will benefit Prison Yoga Project)
