Teacher Development: Principles of Instruction — Twists in the Iyengar Method with Ann Appavoo
Sunday, June 28
1:15-4:30pm • Livestream
Twists ask for precision, patience, and intelligent sequencing — and teaching them well requires an understanding of both their structural complexity and transformative potential.
In this Teacher Development workshop, Ann Appavoo offers a focused exploration of how twists are defined, practiced, and taught within the Iyengar method. Designed for yoga teachers and teachers-in-training, this session examines the mechanics of spinal rotation, the foundational principles that support safe and effective twisting, and the art of sequencing poses to prepare the body intelligently.
Through guided practice, discussion, and hands-on teaching exercises, participants will explore both standing and seated twists, including how to adapt for different bodies, work skillfully with props, and refine verbal instruction for clarity and precision. The workshop also addresses common restrictions, contraindications, and the specific language that helps students move into twists with greater awareness and confidence.
Teachers will leave with a clearer understanding of how to teach twists progressively and effectively, along with practical tools for sequencing and cueing these poses in their own classes.
Ideal for teachers looking to deepen their understanding of Iyengar methodology and strengthen their skill in teaching rotational postures.
Cost: $40
