Teacher Development: Principles of Instruction — Forward Folds with Ann Appavoo
Saturday, April 25
1:15-4:30pm • Livestream
Forward folds invite length, quiet attention, and inward awareness — yet they are often misunderstood, rushed, or approached without the preparation they require.
In this Teacher Development session, Ann Appavoo explores the principles of teaching forward folds through the lens of the Iyengar method. Together, we’ll examine how these poses are defined, prepared, sequenced, and taught with clarity, safety, and intelligence.
Through discussion, guided practice, and practice teaching, participants will explore:
The essential actions and structure of standing and seated forward folds
How to teach from the base up, emphasizing length, stability, and intelligent hip hinging
The physical and psychological effects of forward folds, including their calming and introspective qualities
Common restrictions, injuries, and contraindications, along with skillful use of props and modifications
How to design short, progressive sequences that prepare the legs, spine, chest, and breath for deeper work
The session includes a full practice, small-group teaching, and opportunities to refine instructional language and sequencing through observation and feedback.
Designed for yoga teachers and teachers-in-training, this workshop offers practical tools to teach forward folds with greater confidence, precision, and sensitivity — helping students access both the structural integrity and the quiet depth of these foundational poses.
All traditions and teaching backgrounds are welcome.
Cost: $40
