Built by Teachers, Built With Care: Why Down Under Feels Different

by Lyndsay Allyn Cox

As we get ready to open our 8th Down Under studio, we want to share something with you. Not an announcement, but a reflection.

If you’ve practiced with us for a while, you may have felt it already.

  • The steadiness of the teaching.

  • The care in the room.

  • The sense that this is a place where people stay.

That doesn’t happen by accident.

Down Under has always been built by teachers. People who are in the room every day, holding space, guiding breath, and showing up fully for this community.

As we’ve grown, our commitment has been simple. To make sure that the people you practice with are supported, resourced, and able to build real, sustainable lives doing the work they love.

In an industry where many teachers are stretched thin, we’ve chosen a different path. Growth, for us, means being able to offer teachers something still rare in the wellness world. Full-time careers, health insurance, paid time off, ongoing training, and leadership opportunities. It means experienced teachers staying in the room, not burning out or disappearing, and new teachers being mentored with care.

Every time we open a new studio, we’re not just expanding our footprint. We’re deepening our ability to take care of the people who take care of you.

Growth isn’t the problem. Growth without care is.

This reflection lives in the stories we’re sharing through our My Down Under Story campaign. You’ll hear from people you may recognize. Studio managers, faculty leaders, longtime teachers, and staff reflecting on what it looks like to grow inside a school that values both personal practice and professional life. Together, their stories speak to something larger. A community of students, teachers, and staff growing side by side.

Thank you for being part of this community. For practicing with us, growing with us, and helping shape what Down Under continues to become. We’re so excited to welcome you into what’s next.

With gratitude,
The Down Under Team
