Preparing to audition? Here are some insider tips from our faculty.
Auditioning to become a yoga teacher can be intimidating.
Maybe you’ve just completed your 200-hour training and are preparing to teach your first class, or you’ve been leading for years and are curious about joining a new community.
It’s natural to wonder: Will I fit in? Will my teaching connect? Am I ready?
At Down Under, we understand that feeling. We’ve all been there, stepping into the room with equal parts excitement and vulnerability. To help you stay centered and set yourself up for success, our team (including a real-life casting director!) has gathered a few insights and practical tips.
Whether you join our faculty or continue your journey elsewhere, we’re honored to support you in deepening your teaching and your practice.
We hope these tips help you feel grounded, confident, and ready to approach your audition with ease.
Insider Tip #1: What We’re Really Looking For
Don’t try to fit a mold.
We’re not seeking one “type” of teacher — we want you.
Bring your energy and authentic spark that makes students rearrange their day just to take your class.
Ask yourself: What makes my voice and vision stand out?
Insider Tip #2: Make Your Dialogue Dazzle
Good sequencing and pacing = baseline.
Extraordinary teaching = dialogue that captures attention and quiets the mind.
Your job?
Help students forget their mental chatter and bring their focus into the room.
Insider Tip #3: Connection is Everything
Create a space that feels safe and where students feel seen.
Show vulnerability.
Use humor, hands-on assists (for those with consenting mat clips), or mention students names — whatever feels authentic to you.
Share something real. Make us feel something, even in five minutes.
Insider Tip #4: Pace with Purpose
Flow teachers: take us up the mountain. Move us with vigor, rhythm, and intention.
Restorative teachers: create depth through dialogue, stillness, and emotion.
Make every second count.
Show us what you do best — not perfection, but passion.
While not every audition will land you a spot on a studio’s faculty, every audition is an opportunity to learn more about yourself, your teaching, and the unique energy you bring to a class.
Each experience helps you grow, refine your voice, and build the confidence to step into your next class or audition with authenticity.
Remember, your journey as a teacher is just as important as the outcome. Every step teaches you something new, and every classroom you lead leaves an impact.
