Assisting Guidelines

Hands-on Adjustments, in your hands

The power of skillful and profound adjustments to consenting students is warmly welcomed in Down Under's classrooms. We also know that sexual harassment is not gender-specific and that there are plentiful examples in America and beyond of sexual and verbal abuse in yoga. We believe the role of a teacher is to always remind students of their own agency and voice and to professionally and compassionately respect student feedback and different perspectives when offered. In this way, we are all on the journey of yoga together and can learn from one another.

All Down Under students have the right to choose whether they wish to receive hands-on adjustments or assists.

BEFORE CLASS:

1. Check the schedule to see which classes offer hands-on adjustments and which ones do not. On our printed and digital schedules, a hand icon 🖐🏿 next to a class indicates hands-on adjustments may be offered.

2. Arrive at the studio and check out our Assisting Manual. To give our students an idea of the types of assists they may receive on our floor, the front desk has this non-exhaustive photographic catalog of diverse assists from all different traditions that we consider legitimate.

3. Determine whether or not you are open to receiving hands-on adjustments that day. If yes, pick up a matsnap in the basket at the front of the studio. Note, you can change your mind at any time during class.

DURING CLASS:

1. To indicate that you are interested in receiving assists, clip the matsnap to the top edge of your mat. Reminder, you can change your mind at any time during class by removing the matsnap or verbally declining.

2. If students want to practice in peace, undisturbed, we respect that – no need to say or do anything to indicate this choice.

AFTER CLASS:

1. Return the matsnap to the basket at the front of the studio.

2. Use the form below to either anonymously or with contact information share your suggestions, concerns, and ideas about these assisting guidelines or your experience in the classroom.

Feedback

Our school offers students multiple channels for feedback including our Lead Studio Manager, a direct line to the Director, and an anonymous Student Feedback Form. This form is also available in the studios at the desk.
