In Depth Studies: Easing Tension for the Neck, Shoulders & Upper Back
Chronic aches and fatigue in the are very common especially in the upper body. The last few years have brought a major uptick in screen time (this workshop is livestream!). Add to that the upcoming holidays which, for all their joy, throw us off routines and allow poor postural habits to creep back in.
This slow paced class is primarily designed for self-care. It is an opportunity to become more aware of bad habits and how to change them through a combination of passive, restorative work and gentle asana. The goal is to feel relaxed and renewed at the end of a luxurious practice.

Annual Summer Intensive with Senior Teacher Barbara Benagh
Annual Summer Intensive with Senior Teacher Barbara Benagh
Saturday, July 15th 11am-3pm
Sunday, July 16th 11am-3pm
In Person at Winsor School or Livestream
Over 25 years ago, Barbara Benagh was asked by her local students to teach a
weekend immersion like the workshops she was teaching around the US and beyond. Thus began the tradition of her annual Summer Intensive held each July in Boston. 2023 will be her last. The two-day workshop is also the final opportunity to study with Barbara in person at Down Under.
Barbara’s classes are a slow-paced combination of breathwork, exploratory movement, yoga philosophy and alignment-based poses. Her unique voice and language invite you to listen more than look as you are guided into a deeply meditative practice. The practice is enhanced by your own commitment to spend lots of time up close and personal with your Self. Barbara’s slow style is best suited for mature students and those who are curious to study a non-vinyasa based practice with someone who brings the refinement and skill that comes from practicing and teaching for over 50 years.
As in all her classes, Barbara curates a practice that is based on a theme that grows and comes together at its conclusion leaving you exercised, clear minded, calm, and fulfilled. This year, her focus will be on experiencing the genuine strength of going slow and taking the time to savor the joy of both movement and stillness in detail. She will include poses that are particularly important for the aging body to maintain strength, agility, and flexibility as well as a focus on skills to help maintain a happy upper and lower back.
Described by Yoga Journal as “one of yoga’s most distinctive and compelling voices”, Barbara has practiced and taught yoga for decades. She lives in Durham, NC and teaches livestream classes twice monthly at Down Under.

This workshop will meet at The Winsor School in Boston. The school is near Beth Israel Hospital and has free parking. Though there are some props, students are advised to bring their own. The studio is massive, and enrollment will be limited to allow for social distancing. All participants must be fully vaxxed and boostered against Covid-19.
The workshop will also be available via livestream for those who have chosen not booster, who aren’t yet comfortable being indoors, or are far away. Everyone will receive a copy of the video of the workshop so you can revisit the weekend or attend it at your convenience.
Props: a mat, 1-2 blankets, 1-2 blocks and a strap. For folks joining in person, you will be able to leave props at Winsor School overnight.
Cost: $200.00

In Depth Studies: Happy Back!
Most of us, at one time or another, have experienced lower back pain and know it can be very uncomfortable. For some of us the pain is chronic and leave us feel at its mercy. Hatha yoga is one tool in the toolbox of self-care for the back.
This slow paced workshop is not a back clinic, it is a practice that will combine simple strategies including asana, breath and movement that help restore well-being to spinal function. (Hips and shoulders will benefit as well!)

In Depth Studies - Easing Tension from the Neck and Upper Back
The past two years, and lots of screen time, has taken on a toll on our posture.
While the pandemic has exacerbated tension, upper body stress has always been common. This workshop will focus on developing strategies for unwinding stressed muscles, learning to anchor the upper body in the hips and legs in an asana practice to bring both relief and more reliably comfortable posture.
The goal is simple – deliciously comfortable at the end of the practice and, going forward, skills for better management of old habits.
