Down Under Yoga offers a variety of yoga programs for children and teenagers from pre-school through high school, with classes held in our studio as well as in several Newton public schools. Classes are banded by age, to ensure that the content is appropriate and to foster a sense of community in which students support each other and learn to take the lessons yoga teaches out into the world around them.
In all cases, the emphasis is on having fun, moving well, and settling into the body and breath. Yoga classes can also provide a safe haven during times of stress and change, where kids and teenagers alike can tune into their inner strengths and discover what calm feels like.
While some kids’ yoga classes can be more entertainment than yoga, at Down Under Yoga we believe that children are capable of receiving the benefits of yoga in a very profound way. Our classes offer a balanced mixture of focus and fun, sprouting from both the Iyengar and Vinyasa traditions. Kids can expect lots of laughter and lots of deep breaths. We ask you to sign your child up for a series of classes rather than drop in occasionally. For schedule go to kids classes.
For teenagers we offer classes that foster personal development in a community-based setting. Students can expect lighthearted instruction that guides a serious yoga study. Our teen classes facilitate the building of both strength and flexibility, while relieving the stress of daily life. They offer a true complement to busy academic and extracurricular demands.
Our classes allow teenagers an opportunity to focus on themselves in an environment that encourages a balance between pushing their boundaries and accepting where they are today. An extended Savasana (resting period) is always included to assure that students walk away feeling refreshed, relaxed, and ready for their busy lives beyond our studio doors. For schedule go to teen drop-in classes.
TWEENS & TEENS: Dive deeper into your yoga practice as we explore yoga poses, philosophy, meditation, breath work, relax and renew yoga, partner and acro yoga, the ropes walls, as well as journaling and discussion to enhance your knowledge of yoga, yourself and how to bring these skills into regular life. Walk away with new tools, empowered to create your own home practice that nourishes a deepened sense of self, health, and overall well being.
YOUNGER YOGIS: Our younger students learn yoga poses and breathing exercises to keep their bodies strong and flexible - while having lots of laughs. In a fun creative environment, children explore their creativity and intuition through movement, crafts and more. Partner and group yoga help to teach important skills of connection and cooperation. Nurturing rest, relaxation and meditation exercises to help them feel calm, confident and secure will be also important aspects of each session.
